Profile
Bai Xianyong is a major figure in Taiwanese literature, known for his delicate portrayals of desire, memory, and marginalized identities, pioneering LGBTQ+ writing in the Chinese-speaking world. His representative work, Crystal Boys, depicts the lives of gay men in Taipei’s New Park during the 1970s and is regarded as a classic of queer literature. The novel has been adapted multiple times: as a film directed by Yu Kan-ping in 1986, as a TV series directed by Cao Rui-yuan in 2003, and as stage productions in 2014 and 2020.
At a time when gender and sexual orientation were still considered taboo, Bai Xianyong made gay male characters the literary focus, intricately exploring the interplay of love, desire, and loneliness. His work not only provided gay men with insight into community culture and personal identity formation but also allowed the wider public to recognize LGBTQ+ individuals as real, living people deserving of understanding.
