Profile
Bi An-sheng had lived in Taiwan for more than 30 years, making significant contributions to culture, the arts, and education. He shared decades of life with his Taiwanese same-sex partner, carrying a sincere and profound love for one another.
In 2015, his partner passed away from cancer. At that time, Taiwan had not yet legalized same-sex marriage, and Bi An-sheng was therefore unable to inherit his partner’s property. Only with the consent of his partner’s family was he permitted to remain in the home they had shared for the rest of his life.
In 2016, Bi An-sheng died after falling from a building. During the memorial service, many friends and loved ones shared that he had fallen into deep hardship due to grief over his partner’s death and the inability to inherit the property they had jointly purchased, which ultimately led him to end his life. The incident deeply shocked Taiwanese society and drew greater public attention to the subsequent constitutional interpretation case on marriage equality.
