Profile
Tsai Ing-wen was Taiwan’s first female president. During her time in office, she advanced gender equality and social reforms, significantly contributing to the deepening of Taiwan’s democracy and the expansion of its international visibility.
Following the Constitutional Court’s landmark ruling in 2019, Tsai signed the Enforcement Act for Judicial Yuan Interpretation No. 748 into law during her presidency, making Taiwan the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage and opening a new chapter for gender freedom.
In 2024, when the social media platform Threads (colloquially referred to as “Chui”) restricted certain political posts, netizens creatively began using food items as code names for political figures. For instance, “corn” became a nickname for Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, while former President Tsai was dubbed “bagel” after she was photographed eating a bagel during a transit stop in the United States.
